The old Marmon Estate as it looks today. |
| 'Hemlock Hedges" was owned by one of Avery County's most famous citizens, Howard Marmon. Marmon was the inventor of the Marmon automobile, first a racing car when auto racing "was in its swaddling clothes," and later a luxury automobile comparable with the Packard and Rolls Royce. As a racing car it was "the talk of the motor world," and held a speed record of over 70 miles per hour. The Marmon factories closed in 1932. |
